Dear Mr. Jason Rzucidlo:
I was recently made aware of the article you wrote as Local News regarding Livonia Public Schools (http://americajr.com/news/livoniaschools1130.html). At best, this article should be changed and listed as editorial. This article is one sided and obviously represents the views of certain administrator(s) and/or school board members, but neglects opinions from a growing population of distraught parents living within the boundaries of this school system. There are many items in your 'editorial' I would disagree with. A few examples of such would include "There are 17,000 students currently in the school district. That number is slightly lower than last year, due to the state’s struggling economy" and "The district recently purchased a new math improvement series. This will help students polish their math skills and get them prepared better for the state-mandated exam."
Would you please explain exactly how LPS knows the rationale for the decrease in enrollment? It is ludicrous to think Liepa knows specified, due to the fact LPS has refused to survey parents who have left the district or never enrolled their children. The board has been asked to conduct such research in order to support or negate their allegations for the etiology of declining enrollment. I myself have notified the board members that I never enrolled by daughter in LPS in this "struggling economy", and instead I chose to enroll her in a local parochial school where I have to pay a hefty tuition. My reason was directly due to the reconfiguration, bussing, school locations, etc. relating to the Legacy Initiative. I am cognizant of numerous other concerned parents who have done the same for the same reasons.
Second, how exactly do you know that the Everyday Math program does polish and better prepare LPS students? Please review research regarding the Everyday Math program. To assist you I direct you to LivoniaNeighbors.com forum for 57 pages (with currently 34,149 views) of concern regarding this program, where numerous parents have spent an obscene amount of time researching this matter. Have you researched other states' perspectives and outcomes regarding this same EM program?
To be fair I would expect an honorable journalist to submit another 'news' piece looking at the other side of this story, retract these statements quoted above or as mentioned earlier state this is an editorial piece with facts mixed in with sentiment.
